The green stripe represents the fields and forests of the region, the white stripe represents peace and purity, and the blue stripe represents the sky and water. The red square symbolizes the blood shed by those who fought for independence, and the yellow star represents the department's status as one of the original nine states of the United Provinces of New Granada.
