Thorns Rose

A friend of mine uses the thorns and rose emoji to describe her boss. It's like saying 'she's great, but you have to watch your step.' It captures that mix of respect and caution you feel when someone's both competent and a bit sharp-tongued.

In our gardening club, we call the emoji our 'yard sign' for complicated situations. Like when someone plants a garden in your yard without asking. It's beautiful, but it comes with thorns, and you're left wondering who owns the roses and who owns the pain.

At work, we use it in team meetings when talking about feedback. If someone says, 'Your idea was good, but the delivery was rough,' we just drop the emoji. It's shorthand for 'praise with a side of criticism' , you get the rose, but you have to handle the thorns.

In my neighborhood, we use it as a symbol for local politics. When the city wants to build something new, we say, 'They bring us a rose, but it comes with a thorn in the form of more rules.' It's our way of saying we like the idea, but we want to see how it affects our daily lives.
