On social media, especially among Gen Z, 'dude' often gets tossed into posts as a playful, flexible intensifier, kind of like a verbal shrug that says, 'Look, I don’t know exactly what it means, but it sounds cool.

In older generations, 'dude' can feel like an intruder in a man’s world, where 'fella' or 'guy' are more traditional. For them, using 'dude' might be a way to signal they’re keeping up with the kids, or just a way to roll their eyes at modern lingo.

Workplaces use 'dude' in interesting ways,sometimes as a sign of informality to break down hierarchies, but other times as a subtle reminder that someone doesn’t quite belong, like a junior team member trying to sound too hip for their role.
